Brunswick Street
511
The very beginning. The artist used to rent here and was thrilled to get permission to use the garage door as a canvas. The door on the right was where paint first touched wall. That door has since been painted over but the artist is fine with that because despite how thrilling it was to make, he found it sloppy and ugly anyway, and detracts from the main piece.
The piece itself is a test of the water, a foray into foreign territory. Mondrian and Escher are major influences on the artist and he made sure to imitate his heroes. Exciting, exploratory, and experimental; this piece lacks the forethought of his later work, but the youthful energy of fascination and novelty is apparent. To honour this piece as the birthplace of a new obsession, it is entitled 511.
This work can be seen on the corner of an alley off York street, near Brunswick Street.
