If you observe this piece and feel nothing, feel free to supplant that nothingness with the intentions and title provided below.

But if you do feel something, read no further. Keep those feelings and impressions instead - for they will be worth much more to you.

Jagged Whirlpool

This piece is my attempt to encapsulate the feeling of spiralling. On the one hand, to spiral is to be in a nose-dive, to be hurled around by forces beyond one’s control towards oblivion. On the other, more positive hand, the same feeling applies to gradual progress; long but steady progress homing in towards an ultimate goal. In either case, thoughts and actions tend to beget more of the same thoughts and actions (We are what we repeatedly do, after all), and rarely is the progress smooth. Particular events, struggles, plateaus, achievements, and lucky breaks mark significant milestones in any journey, so I wanted my whirlpool to have distinct sections and abrupt corners while being part of a continuous whole.

This piece was the first after a four month gap, so the work is also self-referential. Not only does it depict a journey of significant milestones, the work itself is a significant milestone in my journey as an artist.

You’ll find this piece near the southern corner of Kent Street and Ascot Vale Road.
